We have been constantly reporting about the slow rise of women in the industry, which is still – in many parts dominated by men. At the Peanut Growers Conference we were happy to see a few female farmers. One of them is Casey Cox, young female farmer in southwest Georgia.
She is currently taking over the reins from her father at Longleaf Ridge Farm near Camilla. Tell us about your farm – and how you went from being a business college graduate to farmer.
Casey Cox: “I am from Southwest Georgia from a family farm. I will actually be the sixth generation farmer in my family. Some of the land on our farm has been in the family for over 150 years. There is a major connection to the land and to the heritage in our family…
…Well, most people are so removed from agriculture. For them it is still hard to believe that there are still family farms…
…Women have such a special perspective, especially with marketing. We just have a different connection with consumers. So having that balance of having women and men in the farm is going to take our farm in a very positive direction…
